Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa

Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa is a small alpine settlement in Australia’s Snowy Mountain region now managed by Novotel. The development is located in Thredbo Valley on the border of the Kosciuszko National Park and is a natural playground surrounded by the spectacular Snowy Mountains.

The resort village at the base of the ski tube accommodates 500 people in a mix of apartments, private residences and a hotel resort accommodation. The village is designed to respond to the alpine climate and the natural landscape, hugging the shores of the artificially made trout-filled lake.  The design sensitively responds to the natural topography while maximising the sunny northern aspect and view to the snow capped Mount Kosciuszko beyond.

The architecture language captures the spirit of the region’s high country vernacular buildings. The project received the Sir John Sulman Award for Outstanding Architecture in 1990.

The project was designed and delivered in two stages for Peter Lewis and FAI. The first stage was delivered out of Noel Robinson Architects’ Sydney office and the second stage occurred after Noel Robinson Architects merged with Bligh Jessup Bretnall Architects in 1988.
