Kingsford Smith Memorial

The external form of the museum was inspired by a traditional aircraft hangar shape โ€“ an appropriate resting place for the vintage Southern Cross aeroplane.

The glass enclosure was designed to ensure the public experienced the aircraft at close quarters with no direct sunlight. Unwanted radiation is excluded by incorporating generous overhangs to the north, the glass wall to the south is shaded by fins to exclude direct sun as is the roof on the east and west which fall to meet the earth beams.

The suspended glazing system is sloped to minimise reflectivity when viewing the artefact, an historic Fokker F7 monoplane. The combination of shading and glass design which permits photography of the aircraft without the difficulties of glare or an imbalance of lighting levels.
